Working with mixed-media techniques is very, very new to me. Sort of.
We all play with glue, paper and scissors at some point. Most of us have played with paint a time or two, but combining all of these into one coherent piece. . . That's the part that is new.
I have posted most of these pieces in the order they were created so that the viewer can see the progression of my work to some extent (They're not all in-order!)
More than any of the other pieces I've created recently, these are among my favorites. I have fun creating them and that is everything! You can expect this gallery to grow and change quickly in the very near future. :-)
Sometimes it is the simplest things in life that are the most interesting.
This is another of the first pieces created using my "new to me" mixed media techniques.
A wise ol' owl. perched against a warm, Autumn background.
This piece was one of the first using my own mixed media techinques that combine handmade, textured papers along with translucent, acrylic washes. Each element gives the piece detpth and character.
The sketch below was my "practice" for this piece.
A Walk in the Park
A favorite, yellow sweater; the cool Autumn air; People watching. . . sometimes, a walk in the park is all one needs to get a head full of new ideas. (This piece was inspired by the sketch below; A somewhat random doodle from my journal.)
This piece is the first in a series inspire by the girl you've seen floating about this website.
Originally created as a colored pencil piece, it is (again) regarding the simple things in life. I for one can not think of much that can cheer one up on a rainy day than a pair of red slickers! And who doesn't adore red???
This piece was inspired by one of my previous drawings. . .
Wind on the Hill
by A. A. Milne
No one can tell me,
Nobody knows,
Where the wind comes from,
Where the wind goes.
It's flying from somewhere
As fast as it can,
I couldn't keep up with it,
Not if I ran.
But if I stopped holding
The string of my kite,
It would blow with the wind
For a day and a night.
And then when I found it,
Wherever it blew,
I should know that the wind
Had been going there too.
So then I could tell them
Where the wind goes...
But where the wind comes from
Nobody knows.
"ODE AND BURGEONINGS"
v.3 from The Captain's Verses by Pablo Naruda
My wild girl, we have had
to regain time
and march backward, in the distance
of our lives, kiss after kiss,
gathering from one place what we gave
without joy, discovering in another
the secret road
that gradually brought your feet close to mine,
and so beneath my mouth
you see again the unfulfilled plant
of your life putting out its roots
toward my heart that was waiting for you.
And one by one the nights
between our separated cities
are joined to the night that unites us.
The light of each day,
its flame or its repose,
they deliver to us, taking them from time,
and so our treasure
is disinterred in shadow or light,
and so our kisses kiss life:
all love is enclosed in our love:
all thirst ends in our embrace.
Here we are at last face to face,
we have met,
we have lost nothing.
We have felt each other lip to lip,
we have changed a thousand times
between us death and life,
all that we were bringing
like dead medals
we threw to the bottom of the sea,
all that we learned
was of no use to us:
we begin again. . .
Obama and His Many Hats
This piece was created to accompany an article in DiversityMBA magazine. The piece that actually appeared in print was an edited version that did not include that background "Obamas."
While the majority of my mixed media pieces are created using tradional means, this piece was done a great deal in Photoshop. After I drew Obama's head and other features in charcoal, I scanned it into my computer, then adding the other elements using various techniques.
The piece below was done for the same issues cover, but was not used.
